Freshman Sanna Nuutinen’s 72 helped TCU move up two places to finish 15th after Tuesday’s final round of the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego.
Nuutinen, a Helsinki, Finland, native, recorded four birdies in a seven-hole stretch. She tied with teammate Brooke Beeler for 25th individually.
Beeler birdied four of her final seven holes en route to a final-round 73. She dropped her score each round of the tournament.
Each team in the field was ranked in the top 50. Golfdigest.com rated The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn as the fourth-toughest event in the nation during the 2011 spring season.
No. 33 TCU lowered its score each day. With a 306, the Horned Frogs concluded play at 937.
NO. 7 Purdue won the team title with an 879, seven strokes ahead of top-ranked USC.
Only three of the 96 golfers shot below par. With a 7-under-par 209, Purdue’s Laura Gonzalez took medalist honors by six shots over UNLV’s Therese Koelbaek and USC’s Lizette Salas.
TCU returns to action April 1 at the PING/Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. It will be the Horned Frogs’ final tournament before beginning play April 14 at the Mountain West Conference Championships.
