The No. 65 TCU women’s tennis team (6-7, 1-1 Mountain West) fell short against the Utah Utes (8-8, 2-0 MWC) 5-2, snapping their four-match winning streak.

The Utes began strong by sweeping the doubles matches. Utah’s pair of Paige Miles and Anastasia Putilina dropped TCU sophomore Federica Denti and senior Katariina Tuohimaa in the No. 1 position with an 8-3 decision. From the No. 2 slot, Frogs’ junior Gaby Mastromarino and sophomore Olivia Smith were defeated 8-3 by Utah’s Evgenia Kryuchkova and Lexi Provancha. The No. 3 doubles duo of Lucia Kovarcikova and Sarah Pham overcame TCU’s pair of seniors Maria Babnova and Idunn Hertzberg, 8-4.

The beginning of singles play went in Utah’s favor. From the No. 5 position, Miles finished the first match against Hertzberg, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Mastromarino picked up the Horned Frogs’ first point by defeating Kovarcikova 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.

Pham’s straight set victory on the No. 4 court against Smith, 6-1, 6-2, placed the Utes ahead of TCU with a 3-1 lead.

No. 108 Kryuchkova clinched the match by defeating Denti 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) on the No. 2 court.

TCU’ Tuohimaa rallied from a first set loss on the No. 1 court to defeat No. 82 Putlinia, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, gaining the second point for the Horned Frogs.

A difficult loss in the tiebreaker in the middle set propelled Utah’s Provancha over junior Shalini Sahoo in the No. 6 position, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
