Former TCU standout Carpenter heads to St. Louis

Former TCU third baseman Matt Carpenter has been called up by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis.

The Cardinals’ Minor League Player of the Year in 2010, Carpenter was a 13th-round selection in 2009 after a standout career for the Horned Frogs saw him be a two-time all-conference selection.

“The entire Horned Frog family is so excited for Matt,” coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “He has worked extremely hard in both college and professional baseball to earn this opportunity, and I know the Cardinals will be a better team for having him up there.

“It’s a great testimony to our program, and to college baseball in general, to have Matt make the big leagues less than two years removed from playing here at TCU.”

Carpenter had a single-season school record 23 doubles while batting .333 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs as a senior in 2009, helping lead the Horned Frogs to their first Super Regional appearance.

The Sugar Land, Texas, native is TCU’s career leader in games played with 241. His 263 hits and 57 doubles rank second all-time at TCU, while his 159 RBIs place fourth. Carpenter was a career .312 hitter.
