There is not one person who does not smile when Ann Milne, a resident of the 109, delivers a meal on her weekly route for Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County.
Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County is a local nonprofit organization that delivers about 4,000 meals a day to people in the Tarrant County area who are homebound and need assistance.
Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County began in 1973 and grew from delivering 25 meals a day to inner-city residents to 4,000 meals throughout the county.
Milne frequently volunteers at Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County and strives to make Meals On Wheels more than just a meal.
Milne moved to the 109 in 1992, and has lived here ever since with her husband, who works with the TCU football team, and three daughters.
She began working with Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County after she was inspired by how much the organization helped her grandmother who was recovering at home.
“I enjoy getting to know them and getting to know their story before they were homebound,” said Milne. Each week Milne connects with the people she delivers food to and is often inspired by the people she meets.
Every Tuesday, Milne helps out by delivering an average of nine meals to people in the surrounding area.
Tina Carson, a friend of Milne, describes Milne as someone who has a, “true and sincere love for these people that she serves” and was inspired by her to start volunteering for at Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County as well.
Along with her delivery route, Milne is involved with the Southwest Council and volunteer relations committee at Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County.
When asked about what the people in 76109 can do to help out this organization, Milne responded, “ volunteer!”
Milne’s philosophy is, “One one one. It takes one person, one day a week, one hour to make a difference.”
The organization offers more than just a lunch or breakfast meal every day. At least every three months a client is visited by a professional case manager that checks in with them and assists with other needs, like dog food or finding transportation.
Anyone with a smile and a willingness to connect with people can help make Meals On Wheels, “more than just a meal,” said Nedra Cutler, director of volunteers for Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County.
