The Track and Field Championships started off with a bang for senior Jessica Young and sophomore Charles Silmon at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Both runners ran well in the preliminary heats for 100 meters and will advance in their event.
Young earned the right to compete in the women’s semifinals after running a 11.14, good for sixth place overall. The time edged the 11.16 mark set by NCAA champion Candyce McGrone. The semifinals consist of the top 18 runners.
Silmon also advanced to the semifnals by running a 10.24, which was faster than the times he posted at the NCAA Regional and National Championships. Both Silmon and Young will attempt to qualify in the 200 meter run, set on Saturday.
In addition to Young and Silmon, TCU will also feature former four-time U.S. champion Hall of Famer Khadevis Robinson will also move on this weekend, running a qualifying time of 1:48.52 in the 800 meters prelims.
Senior Mychal Dungey also ran, placing sixth in the first heat of the men’s 400 meters.
