The TCU women’s soccer team beat Lamar 2-0 to grab its first win of the 2011 season Sunday at the Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

The Frogs improved to 1-1 on the season after a strong second half performance that was highlighted by the first career goals of Natalie Werner and Brook Kviz.

TCU head coach Dan Abdalla said the key to the second half performance, and the win, was patience.

“Lamar was extremely disciplined defensively so that made it a difficult game to be able to break them down,” Abdalla said. “I was very happy with how in the second half we were able to be a lot more patient and use the width a lot more.”

TCU had plenty of opportunities throughout the game but didn’t take advantage of any until after halftime.

The Frogs finally capitalized on a corner kick in the 53rd minute when Werner, a true freshman, scored her first career goal for TCU. Junior midfielder Monica Alvarado was credited with the assist after she passed it to Werner, who placed the ball perfectly into the top-right corner of the goal.

Redshirt freshman forward Brooke Kviz extended the Frogs’ lead in the 82nd minute when she too scored her first goal as a Horned Frog. True freshman forward Tori Hale beat a Lamar defender outside the box and passed the ball to Kviz, who headed the pass into the left side of the goal.

Freshmen Natalie Werner, Tori Hale, Alicen Wright, and Dixie Kurrus all saw action in their home debuts as Horned Frogs.

Abdalla said he was glad to see certain players making an impact on the field.
“I was really happy some individuals stepped up to make a difference,” Abdalla said. “Overall I was pleased with the effort.”

The Horned Frogs improved to 1-1-0 on the season and play against the Rice Owls this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

Notes: The Frogs earned the victory without Senior forward Jordan Calhoun. Calhoun, TCU’s all-time leading goal scorer, suffered an ankle injury in Friday night’s 1-0 loss to Oklahoma State. Abdalla said he’d rather have Calhoun available but was glad to be able to give some younger players the opportunity to play more…Attendance was 1,459.
