Men’s golf place second at first tournament

The TCU men’s golf team finished 2nd in the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate tournament in Verona, N.Y., their first tournament of the season. Coming in behind Baylor, (-11) the Frogs finished even par with 864 strokes. Missouri and Purdue (+2) tied for third.

Freshman Julien Brun came in first place in his first intercollegiate event ever. Brun shot -8, including a 67 stroke effort on his second round on Sunday. Brun is the 24th individual title winner under head coach Bill Montigel’s 24-year reign. Brun was also named TCU individual athlete of the week along with volleyball player Sarah Joeckel, who played a stand out role in the Frogs sweeping the SMU

Doubletree Invitational last weekend. Junior Daniel Jennevret came in 2nd, giving TCU both first and second place. Jennevret played consistently the entire tournament. He shot a 70 on each of his three rounds giving him a total of 210 strokes, six under par. It was his highest finish since the Prestige at PGA West tournament of 2009, his freshman year.

Other notable finishes include: junior Pontus Gad in 24th place (+7), senior Johan de Beer in a tie for 25th (+8), and sophomore Ian Phillips tied for 55th (+19). This was Phillips’ first varsity tournament.
The Frogs will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 16, at the McLaughlin Tournament in Farmington, N.Y.

Montigel said playing in tournaments on the East Coast, like the Turning Stone and the upcoming McLaughlin, would give TCU a look at the competition the team will face next season when the it makes the move to the Big East Conference.

“It gives us the chance to play against some of the Big East teams, so we will get a look at our main opposition next season,” Montigel said.
