A recap of former TCU players who saw action in NFL games this past weekend:
Andy Dalton
Position: Quarterback
Years Played at TCU: 07-10
Current Team: Cincinnati Bengals
Outcome of game: Denver 24, Cincinnati 22
Stats:
Completions/Attempts: 27/41
Passing Yards: 332
Passing Touchdowns: 2
Interceptions: 0
Quarterback Rating: 107.0
Analysis: Rookie Andy Dalton threw for a career-high 332 yards with a pair of touchdowns in Sunday’s loss at Denver. Dalton threw down the field more than he did last week against the Cleveland Browns, targeting Jerome Simpson and A.J. Green, who combined for 260 yards and a touchdown. The wrist injury that kept him out of action last week did not appear to hinder him. Dalton appears to be settling into the pace of the NFL and has yet to throw an interception this season.
LaDainian Tomlinson
Position: Running back
Years Played at TCU: 97-00
Current Team: New York JetsOutcome of game: New York 32, Jacksonville 3
Stats:
Carries: 6
Rushing Yards: 8
Rushing Touchdowns: 0
Catches: 1
Receiving Yards: 7
Analysis: The Jets seem to be conserving LT as much as they can early in the season. We saw them use him a lot in pressure and passing situations last week, but the Jets had the game well in hand throughout and did not need to use Tomlinson. Shonn Greene has not played well in either of the Jets’ first two games of the season and Tomlinson should get more action in closer games.
Marshall Newhouse
Position: Offensive line
Years played at TCU: 06-09
Current team: Green Bay Packers
Stats: No stats, but Newhouse did see substantial playing time in Green Bay’s 30-23 win over Carolina Sunday.
David Hawthorne
Position: Linebacker
Years Played at TCU: 04-07
Current Team: Seattle Seahawks
Outcome of game: Pittsburgh 24, Seattle 0
Stats:
Tackles: 3
Analysis: Hawthorne made his season debut Sunday coming off of a knee injury and recorded three tackles. Even though the Seahawks looked dismal on both sides of the ball, the defense exposed problems in the Steelers’ offensive line, sacking Ben Roethlisberger twice and knocking him down an additional three times.
Drew Coleman
Position: Cornerback
Years Played at TCU: 04-05
Current Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
Outcome of game: New York 32, Jacksonville 3
Stats: Tackles: 3
Analysis: Coleman was going up against his former team in the Jets this week, and he and the rest of the Jaguars’ secondary did not do as poorly as the score may suggest. The Jags’ defense forced the Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez to throw two picks and held him under 185 yards on the day. As of now, Coleman is the nickel corner, but if this defense continues to struggle, he could see more playing time in the future.
Jeremy Kerley
Position: Wide receiver
Years Played at TCU: 07-10
Current Team: New York Jets
Outcome of game: New York 32, Jacksonville 3
Stats:
Kick Returns:1
Kick Return Yards:15
Analysis: Kerley returned one kick for 15 yards in a 32-3 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags only kicked it off three times and Antonio Cromartie returned the other two for 85 yards. Kerley was also in on seven offensive plays but was not a factor in the win. It remains to be seen how they use him in this offensive scheme.
