TCU basketball received its second and third commitments for the class of 2012 over the weekend.

The first commitment came from Fort Worth product Charles Hill, who attends Trimble Tech High School. Hill is a 6’3 shooting guard who has been hailed by his AAU coach as the most athletic player in the state of Texas for the class of 2012.

Hill’s AAU coach, Vonzell Thomas, said his shooting guard is versatile and athletic.

“Charles is the best athlete in the class of 2012 in Texas, I think,” Thomas said. “This is a huge steal for TCU. He can play multiple positions, and going into the Big 12, he brings that athleticism that a lot of teams in that league covet heavily.”

Hill cited his great relationship with the TCU coaching staff as the main reason for his commitment. He also said he was impressed with the campus on his visit, and he and his family decided that playing close to home was very important.

“My family and I sat down and talked about it, and it was close to home,” Hill said. “They could come see me play, and I have a disabled sister. I wanted her to be able to come see me. But really I have just always been a TCU fan.”

Hill was also receiving interest from Big 12, Big East, and Missouri Valley (Conference) schools.

The next TCU commitment came from Clyde Smith of the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. Smith is ranked as a “three star” recruit by Rivals.com, and he can play both the wing and the point position. Smith is renowned for his quickness and basketball savvy.

His head coach at Hotchkiss, Fred Benjamin, spoke highly of Smith’s all-around game.

Smith held offers from Notre Dame, Stanford, Boston College, and Iowa, among others. During his official visit to TCU, Smith met with Athletic Director Chris del Conte and academic advisors.

“Clyde really just got a special feeling about the TCU program,” Benjamin said. “The way the coaches interacted with him and the way they showed so much dedication to him set them apart.”

Smith scored over 2000 on his SAT and has stressed academics throughout his entire recruitment. On the court, Smith has a good jump shot from three-point range, and his biggest strength may be his pull-up game from 15-17 feet away from the basket.

“He can fill up the score sheet in bunches, and he can do it in a lot of different ways” Benjamin said.“One game Clyde had 22 points in the first half, and I knew that coming out in the second half he was going to get his teammates involved. He ended up with over ten assists in that game. That’s how well-rounded his game is.”

Hill and Smith join Los Angeles, California, power forward Reggie Murphy in head coach Jim Christian’s 2012 class.
