Halloween attractions provide scares

Two local haunted houses, Cutting Edge and Hangman’s House of Horrors, provide opportunities for students to get into the Halloween spirit.

Cutting Edge Haunted House, located on Lancaster Avenue, is a multistory, multi-themed haunted house in an abandoned warehouse in the Meatpacking District of Fort Worth. It has been featured on the Travel Channel as one of America’s scariest haunted attractions.

According to their website, Cutting Edge is the best haunted house in Texas and is number six in the nation.

“Cutting edge is awesome,” Hunt Baker, a sophomore premajor, said. “I went last year and was scared to death.”

He said it is one of the things he looks forward to doing for Halloween.

Senior Collin Ashworth said going to Cutting Edge is worth the $30.

“I go once a year. They have rides, and it’s definitely scary enough and a good time,” he said.

According to Hangman’s House of Horrors website, this is its twenty-third year as the top charity-benefiting haunted house in the world and has donated $1.7 million to local charities.

The haunted house is mainly volunteer-run because its net proceeds benefit local charities, junior nursing major Eleanor Weltge said.

Some students involved in service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega have volunteered at Hangman’s.

Weltge, an APO member, said she has volunteered for the past two years. This year she went with a group of about ten students.

“Hangman’s is probably my favorite volunteer experience out of all the ones I have participated in,” she said.

The volunteers get to decide if they would rather scare people or be funny before they choose their costume. She said she volunteered in the Wonderland side attraction to work with more children.

“I was dressed up as Twiddle Dee. I loved getting to be silly the whole time because it’s so much fun playing with the kids, she said.

“I really enjoyed volunteering for Hangman’s. They’re a really cool organization and give all of their money to nonprofits,” Weltge said.
