TCU quarterback Casey Pachall threw for a career-high 473 yards and five touchdowns on 24-of-37 passing as the Frogs upset no. 5 Boise State 36-35 Saturday at Bronco Stadium.

Pachall found Brandon Carter for a 25-yard touchdown with 1:05 left in the game that cut Boise’s lead to 35-34. TCU opted to go for the two-point conversion and converted it when Josh Boyce reeled in a pass from Pachall, shook off a Boise defender and walked into the endzone.

Patterson said going for the two was TCU’s only option.

“I told them at the start of the drive ‘Listen, we won’t win overtime here,” Patterson said. “Josh and Casey made a great play.”

The Broncos got the ball back and drove down to the TCU 22-yard line when kicker Dan Goodale came out for a 39-yard field goal attempt to win the game.

Goodale didn’t make it.

The freshman’s kick sailed wide right as time expired, giving TCU the win and handing Boise State its first conference loss at home since 1998.

Pachall set the school record for touchdown passes in a single game and is now second on the TCU list of most yards in a game. Patterson said Pachall’s play Saturday wasn’t any different then how he’s played all season.

“To be honest with you, he’s played that way all year,” Patterson said. “In those other two games (losses to Baylor and SMU) we came up short. This was the first game finally (that TCU came back and won).”

The Frogs led 20-14 at halftime but lost the lead quickly in the third quarter when receiver Antoine Hicks fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. BSU’s Tyrone Crawford scooped up the loose ball and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. Goodale nailed the extra point to put BSU up 21-20.

The Broncos added to their lead later in the quarter when running back D.J. Harper took it in from three yards out for his second score of the game.

Down 28-20, TCU responded, driving the length of the field on their next possession and capping off the drive with a two-yard touchdown pass from Pachall to Boyce. Pachall would run it in for the two point conversion to tie the game at 28-28.

Patterson said his team wasn’t in a good situation once BSU returned the fumble for the touchdown and scored again to get up 28-28. Thankfully, though, the Frogs were resilient, Patterson said.

“After the fumble on the opening play of the half and they got it back, I felt like we were in a lot of trouble because we let them have the momentum back,” Patterson said. “But our kids fought back.”

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore found freshman receiver Dallas Burroughs for a 54-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to put the Broncos ahead 35-28.

Moore threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns on 28-of-38 passing. Patterson said he’s happy it was his last time facing Moore, who’s a senior.

“I’m glad I don’t ever have to face Kellen Moore again,” Patterson said.

Boyce finished the game with 5 catches for a team-high 163 yards and three touchdowns, two which came in the first half.

Patterson said going into the game TCU knew they would have to make some big plays to spark their offense against a tough Boise State defense. The Frogs did just that with Boyce’s two first half scores — from 74 and 69 yards — along with a 75-yard touchdown haul from Carter in the second quarter.

“We knew we weren’t going to be able to drive on that defense,” Patterson said. “They have a very good defense so we knew were going to have to create some big plays and we got fortunate.”
