A sorority on campus raised more than $700 in two days for women in Uganda.

Sigma Kappa sold beaded jewelry created from recycled magazines made by Ugandan women in the Brown-Lupton University Union last week benefiting BeadforLife. The non-profit organization gives women in Uganda the opportunity to support themselves and their families by making jewelry.

“The event went really well," Lea LaFortune, Vice President of Philanthropic Service said. “Students at TCU were very receptive and it was something different that we don't see very often. It was neat to have people come up and ask questions about what we were selling and to want to support the women and their families.”

The event was a part of the sorority’s annual Week of Giving. They also planted flowers at Garden Terrace, baked cookies for Panhellenic members and welcomed new members with bonding activities.

“The week is dedicated to serving others to enhance the personal growth of each sister," LaFortune, a senior interior design major, said. “We require members to complete a certain amount of community service hours during the semester but many of our women go above and beyond the requirement."

The sorority hoped to continue its sales to reach their goal of $2,500 for BeadforLife. Students and staff can buy jewelry from Jenna Simard at [email protected] and at the BeadforLife’s online store.
