Five members of the Women’s Rifle team are shooting past TCU to the Olympic tryouts.

Rifle team members Catherine Green, Claudia Duksa, Sarah Beard, Jaime Dowd and Sarah Scherer will travel to Anniston, Ala., for the first stage of the Olympic Airgun Team Trials Dec. 2-4.

Karen Monez, head coach of Women’s Rifle, said the main difference between collegiate competition and the Olympic tryouts was that they are used to shooting 60 shots in collegiate competition while at these tryouts they will shoot 40 shots. The team members will compete in both air rifle and smallbore at the tryouts, but Monez said they would focus on their strength: air rifle.

Two of the athletes competing are members of the U.S. Shooting Team, and the other three were chosen based on their competition averages for air rifle, Monez said.

Beard, a junior biology and Spanish double major, said she expected the Olympic tryouts to be different because the scores would be completely individual rather than combined with other team members.

“For Olympic tryouts, it’s just you competing against everyone else as an individual,” Beard said.

Green, a sophomore art education major, said trying out for the Olympic team has been a lifelong dream for her. She is preparing by trying different training methods and putting a lot of effort into practice.
