No court date has been set for starting kicker Ross Evans. He was arrested on Nov. 21 for criminal trespass of a habitation, Denton Police Department Public Information Officer Ryan Grelle said.

“[The case] has got to go through intake and through the investigator and all that, so it could be a while before the court date is set,” Grelle said.

It could be as long as several weeks before a court date is decided upon, he said.Evans was involved in a confrontation on Nov. 8 when he kicked down the front and bedroom door of an apartment in Denton while trying to retrieve his girlfriend’s friend’s stolen cellphone, Grelle said.

“The way I’m looking at it, this was a cellphone incident,” Grelle said.

He said Evans was looking for a man named William Horn. They had attended a party in Denton separately, and Horn stole the phone from a high school friend as a joke. Horn initially told police that Evans was looking for money, but Grelle said Horn recanted that statement and admitted he took the cellphone from Evans’ girlfriend’s friend. Criminal trespassing is a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, Evans could face up to a year in jail or up to a $4,000 fine, or both, Grelle said.

Director of Media Relations Mark Cohen wrote in an email that head coach Gary Patterson would speak at the press conference today at 12:30 p.m.. Cohen did not comment further. Grelle was unable to confirm whether Evans had a lawyer.

The North Texas Daily tried to contact the witnesses at the apartment complex last Tuesday but did not get a response.
