Despite several player injuries this season, members of the TCU Rugby team have maintained a positive attitude toward the rest of their upcoming matches.

The team had a strong start to this season, winning matches against OU, Baylor and the University of Texas at a tournament in Waco in September.

Senior film, television and digital media major Scott Schofield said the tournament was one of his proudest accomplishments as a member of the team.

“We faced some pretty tough teams at that tournament and came out on top, and I think everyone was really excited about winning those games,” he said.

After the tournament, however, four of the team’s players were injured and could not compete, senior geology major and TCU rugby player Albert Parent said.

The team is currently 3-4 with the last game of the semester coming up against Texas State on Saturday.

Fifth-year senior and movement science major Daniel Bodin said despite the team’s losses, he is proud of each player’s ability to keep his head up and have fun at the matches.

Schofield also said the bond he has with his fellow teammates is the most fulfilling aspect of being on the team.

“We have all definitely bonded a lot,” he said. “I consider these guys really close friends of mine. We’re all pretty much brothers.”

Team members have hope for the rest of the season and believe that they are getting better in their matches, which continue through March, Parent said.

Schofield said the leadership of the coaches has helped guide team members in improving their skills.

“We have a couple of fantastic coaches who really know the game and have played it for years,” he said.

Practices take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the intramural fields, and anyone is welcome to participate. Parent said he had seen around 10 new players come participate in practices, and some of them eventually became permanent team members.

Bodin said he will enjoy playing in the upcoming match against Texas State with his teammates, whether they are new or returning members. He said simply playing alongside them is the highlight of each of the matches in which he participates.

However, Schofield said he is looking forward to the match because it is a rivalry game, dating back to 2009 when TCU lost to Texas State in a championship game. He said the game, like all rugby games, will be a good way to go out, get exercise, let out aggression and relieve stress.

The game will be played Saturday at the Texas State campus in San Marcos at 2 p.m.
