The first Mountain West Conference road trip for Boise State will bring the Broncos to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum Saturday afternoon to face TCU men’s basketball.
The Frogs and the Broncos enter the contest evenly matched, both 10-7 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain West.
The meeting between the two teams will be the first since December 1977, which ended in a 69-43 victory for the Broncos.
Both teams have something to prove going into Saturday’s match. The Frogs and the Broncos both remain winless in the Mountain West Conference and are reeling back from tough losses on the road.
The Frogs fell Wednesday night to the UNLV Rebels 101-78, which dropped below their scoring average of 89 points in a game.
The Broncos’ lack of defensive pressure led them to a 66-55 upset by the Colorado State Rams Tuesday night in Fort Collins, Colo..
Coincidentally, the lack of a defensive presence also contributed to the Frogs’ 95-89 loss to the Rams last week in double overtime. Both teams are expected to intensify their defensive approach in search of their first victory in the conference.
Each team will enter Saturday’s game with different strengths.
Boise State is ranked No. 5 in scoring on defense, holding all of their opponents to an average of 70 points per game. TCU currently holds the No. 2 spot in scoring on offense with 83.5 points, only to be topped by the Rebels in Las Vegas.
Boise State freshman guard Anthony Drmic and TCU senior guard Hank Thorns both lead their teams in scoring.
TCU junior forward Garlon Green currently ranks third overall in rebounding in the MWC. Also standing out in the conference is TCU sophomore forward Amric Fields, who is currently No. 1 in free throws, with Boise State sophomore forward Ryan Watkins helping round out the list at No. 9.
Although the Frogs and Broncos will go into the competition with virtually the same winning and losing record thus far, only one will emerge victorious Saturday afternoon.
