Razorback Invitational begins season for track and field

TCU track & field will jump start its season at the Razorback Invitational this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. against tough national competition.

TCU will be one of 14 teams competing at the meet.

Head coach Darryl Anderson said the team planned to use this meet to prepare for the rest of the season. Last season, TCU had athletes finish in the top three in three different events in the 2011 Razorback Invitational.

Sophomore sprinter Briyanni Thomas finished second in the women’s 800-meter run, and Whitney Gipson, a senior jumper and sprinter, finished third in the women’s long jump. TCU also finished third in the women’s 1600-meter relay.

Jessica Young, who graduated in 2011, posted the best time of the meet, 7.25 seconds, in the women’s 60-meter dash as well.

The Razorback Invitational was the starting point for TCU last season, Anderson said. He said 2012 is going to be a different story.

“We’re younger this year, so right now we are just pecking away at this thing,” Anderson said.

He said he expected the young talent to contribute to the competition this weekend.

However, TCU will face tough opponents. According to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association, there will be 10 top 25 men’s track and field teams and nine top 25 women’s teams at the meet.

Junior sprinter Charles Silmon said he was confident he would be able to face the competition.

Silmon will have to race against four top 10 USTFCCA sprinters in the 60-meter dash.

“We should do good, we’ve just got to stay focused and stay humble,” Silmon said.

His confidence, he said, did not only apply to himself but also to the team as a whole.

Gipson said she shared Silmon’s confidence. She is number five in the country in long jump, and will have to compete against two other top five long jumpers.

Anderson said this meet was just a step to bigger competition in February.
