It was a busy weekend for TCU athletics. Here's a quick look at how each team fared:
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team beat New Mexico 63-56 on Saturday for its third straight victory. Freshman center Ashley Colbert led the Frogs with 11 points. With the victory, TCU improved to 11-10 overall and 4-2 in Mountain West play. TCU will travel to Wyoming on Wednesday.
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team dropped a 71-54 decision in New Mexico on Saturday. Sophomore forward Amric Fields had 16 points, and senior guard J.R. Cadot chipped in 15. TCU was outrebounded 36-27. The Frogs dropped to 12-8 overall, 2-3 Mountain West. TCU will return home to face Wyoming on Wednesday.
Track & Field
TCU finished a two-day competition at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Junior Charles Silmon won the 60-meter title with a time of 6.71 seconds. Junior Cameron Tabor took the weight throw title with a heave of 18.09 meters, and he also finished seventh in the shot put. Sophomore Briyanni Thomas had a runner-up finish in the 800 meters, clocking in a 2:13.44. In the 60-meter, junior Chaniqua Corinealdi ran a 7.47 to finish third. In the pits, senior Whitney Gipson placed third in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.21 meters.
Rifle
The women’s rifle team is the only undefeated team in the country after defeating West Virginia on Saturday. The win is the team’s 27th straight regular season victory and improved its record to 8-0 on the season. The Frogs had an aggregate score of 4,701, making it the third time this season they have surpassed 4,700. Junior Sarah Scherer led the Frogs with a 589 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle, followed by a 586 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle from junior Sarah Beard.
Women’s Tennis
The women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season Sunday for the first time since the spring of 2005, beating Lamar 6-1. The No. 31-ranked doubles pair of sophpomore Millie Nichols and junior Olivia Smith won its match 8-1. Juniors Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram, the No. 57-ranked doubles team in the nation, bounced back to win 8-3, clinching the doubles point for TCU. For the singles matches, No. 92-ranked Stefanie Tan swept Carolina Maso of Lamar 6-2, 6-3 to help the Frogs win the singles matches.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s tennis team dropped both of its matches this weekend. The Frogs lost 7-0 to No. 4 Georgia on Sunday. Georgia swept all the singles and doubles matches. TCU battled Nebraska to a 4-0 loss on Monday. Senior Paul Chappell and freshman Will Stein’s 9-7 loss allowed the Huskers to clinch the doubles point. Nebraska gained a 2-0 control after a singles win. For singles, senior Daniel Sanchez was unable to grab a victory for the Frogs, while junior JT Sundling couldn’t pull out a second set tiebreaker.
