Several recent TCU graduates have been awarded Fulbright scholarships and have been given the opportunity to travel abroad to teach English, study and conduct research.
The effort these students put in to apply to this prestigious program and others, should be applauded for the students’ efforts to continue their education and give back to the global community. Each student who receives this type of opportunity not only advances their personal goals but also helps the university achieve its mission.
When students first come to the university, they hear the same overarching goal: “To educate individuals to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community.” While some students simply archive this brief statement in the back of their college memories, others choose to live out this mission both before and after they graduate.
For the faculty and staff members who help inspire and guide these students, it should be a pat on the back to continue their work of bringing out the absolute best in the students they lead.
For the students who hear about these opportunities and think to themselves, “Hey, this could be for me,” it would be wise to give it a try. Going back to the old cliché, it couldn’t hurt to shoot for the moon and land among the stars.
So while Spain and Malaysia might seem far away geographically, the students on this campus might consider that competing for rewarding opportunities like a Fulbright scholarship is not such a stretch for many.
While these opportunities are extremely competitive, the challenge would be well worth the effort. After all, the good things we encounter in life are often results of some of the biggest risks we take.
