The university should break a school record of admission applicants, as a grand total of about 19,500 applicants are expected to apply for the class of 2016, Dean of Admission Ray Brown, said.
As of Friday, the university had received 18,622 applications. Of those applications, 7,063 students have been admitted to the university, with another 200-500 more students expected to be admitted.
The university expected to enroll no more than 1,850 of those students for the upcoming semester, Brown said.
The application pool featured better-qualified applicants than past years, as applicants as a whole raised their average SAT score by 25 points, Brown said. Additionally, more racially diverse students and more out-of-state students applied to the university than ever before.
Student Government Association President Brent Folan said he believed the rise in applications came from a rise in national profile, including strong performances in athletics and a top 30 ranking for the Neeley School of Business.
According to data provided from the Office of Admission, the university received applications from 19,166 students last year. Of those applicants, 7,215 were accepted and 1,869 students enrolled for the class of 2015.
