The TCU School of Art plans to open a new exhibition that will exemplify the adaptation of color as a subject matter in photography.

Devon Nowlin, gallery manager and TCU graduate student, said “Color Pictures” will be the Fort Worth Contemporary Arts gallery’s first photography exhibit and provides examples of conceptual photography, straight photography, art photography, photojournalism and social documentary.

Frances Colpitt, curator for the exhibit, collected and organized the pieces for the exhibit based on a graduate seminar she taught last spring, Nowlin said.

Nowlin said she and other students from the seminar contributed to the exhibition by writing a catalog description to accompany the photos and artists displayed in order to help visitors fully understand each of the art pieces. The catalog would be distributed at the gallery reception in April, she said.

Megan Smith, curatorial assistant, also contributed to the catalog.

“TCU consistently aims to bring the community together on campus,” Smith said. “Allowing graduate students to work so closely on this project shows the university’s dedication to student unity and involvement.”

In hopes of generating greater interest throughout the campus community, Nowlin said the gallery would host a tour for faculty and staff March 13 and would be open for student organizations to have private viewings.

“Faculty and non-art majors would be surprised at their naturally high level to understand imagery, because everyone is constantly reading the numerous images they are bombarded with everyday,” Nowlin said.

Smith said she shared Nowlin’s opinion.

“Everyone takes pictures; photography has even become a tool of social networking with the thousands of people using the Instagram application on their cell phones,” Smith said. “Hopefully students who attend the exhibit are inspired by the photos and can incorporate what they see in the artwork into their own photos.”

The photographs displayed would represent a large number of artists, she said. Some of those featured included well-known artist John Baldessari and Dallas-based artist Allison V. Smith.
