SGA to utilize social media marketing

Students have contributed an annual $90 student fee toward the Student Government Association budget, but according to the student body vice president of operations, few students actually know what SGA did with that money.

Joshua Simpson, student body vice president of operations, said SGA was in the process of budgeting for a new marketing team aimed at increasing communication between SGA and the student body.

Simpson said he expected the marketing team’s focus to be on social media. Using social media could help SGA overcome the challenge of getting its message across while competing against numerous other organizations on campus.

According to research published by the Pew Research Center website in December 2011, 80 percent of Americans ages 18 to 29 years old use social networking.

Jaclyn Cravello, director of communications for SGA, said, her communication studies major gave her a special understanding of social media and its impact on communicating with college students.

“The marketing team’s use of social media will be especially important for improving connections specifically with freshmen,” Cravello said.

Cravello said being a freshman and an SGA member gave her an advantage because she had a better awareness of freshman students’ concerns, such as 1873 Café and Sports Grill menu changes and adding new majors and minors.

But freshman Spanish major Caroline Collins said she knew little about SGA and that if the SGA members took the initiative to reach out, she expected freshmen would take a more active role in giving input and voicing ideas to SGA.

“I think many freshmen, like myself, are still trying to find their place here at TCU,” Collins said.
