Some students might spend Spring Break building a house for a less fortunate family in Florida, Menglu Cai, coordinator of the Habitat for Humanity Spring Break trip, said.

Melissa Morales, co-coordinator of the trip, said the students would work on the project March 18-24 and would stay at a church in Pensacola, Fla.

Morales said 12 students participated last year, and this year 22 students had signed up, filling the trip’s capacity.

Cai, a sophomore business major, said the group would build a house for a single mother and her two children.

According to the Habitat for Humanity website, the Christian organization has built 500,000 houses for those in need since 1976.

This will be Cai’s second consecutive trip, but it would be her first time as coordinator, Cai said. The students will not be accompanied by any faculty during the trip, she said.

Morales said that despite the nature of the trip, it would not be all work and no play. The day the group arrived would be designated a free day, and the time most likely would be spent at the beach, she said.

Morales said she was happy about having more volunteers and that she was excited for the future trips the organization would take.

Morales and Cai agreed that the trip was not only about the opportunity to help those in need, but to build lasting friendships that would drive students to volunteer again.
