The women’s tennis team made a comeback from a tough loss Monday to win against the University of Texas at Arlington 6-1 yesterday night at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The No. 49 Horned Frogs improved to 5-3 while the Mavericks dropped to 4-4.
Senior Gaby Mastromarino and freshman Simona Parajova were the first duo to win in doubles play, scoring 8-2 over UTA freshman duo Christine Foote and Liucija Smaizyte.
Juniors Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram defeated sophomore Giada D’Ortona and senior Natalia Mayuk 8-3, giving the Horned Frogs a victory in the double matches.
Denti returned to the court Monday for the first time in two weeks without practice because of an injury.
“It was good to bounce back from Monday,” Denti said. “We played better both in doubles and in singles. There’s still room for much improvement, but we’re getting there.”
TCU jumped out to a head start in singles play when Foote retired from an injury, giving sophomore Gabi Barbosa the win.
Junior Olivia Scott finished strong by defeating UTA freshman Verena Scott in back-to-back 6-0 matches.
Three additional wins, which included a comeback win, sealed the match for the Horned Frogs. Parajova fought hard for the tiebreaking win against Mayuk 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (12).
Head coach Dave Borelli said he was happy with how the team competed against UTA. He said he took Parajova’s comeback as a good sign.
“I think it’s a big step forward for her learning process,” Borelli said.
He said he was confident about the match against Princeton on Saturday as long as the team continued to play as well as it did last night.
