Former KTCU-FM station manager Constantino Bernardez, 84, died Monday in Fort Worth. TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini called for the flag to be lowered to half-staff on Friday in memory of Mr. Bernardez.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at First Congregational Church United Church of Christ on 4201 Trail Lake Drive, Fort Worth.
Mr. Bernardez was born on April 6, 1927 in Dumaguete City, Philippines. He attended Silliman University where he earned his bachelor’s degree, his son Dan Bernardez said. He also earned his master’s from Ohio State University.
He was the leading baritone singer in the Philippines and performed in several major operas, Dan Bernardez said. He also performed with the Hong Kong Oratorical Society.
He moved to the states in 1976 and became station manager at KTCU-FM in 1977. He worked there until his retirement in 1993. His son said upon retirement he spent time with his family and sang in his church’s choir.
Mr. Bernardez had a great sense of humor that could make anyone feel at ease, his grandson Nick Verzosa said.
Mr. Bernardez is survived by his wife, Helen Strawbridge Bernardez; his children Barbara Verzosa, Priscilla Villamil, David Bernardez and Dan Bernardez as well as 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
