The TCU baseball team lost 4-3 to Dallas Baptist Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. The loss was the Horned Frogs’ fifth in a row to the Patriots, dating back to 2009. 

DBU beat the Frogs in the NCAA Fort Worth Regional in June, the first of two losses that eliminated TCU from postseason play.

Left-fielder Jason Coats led TCU at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run in the sixth inning. Coats’ run was the first scored by TCU in 16 innings. The Frogs (14-12) were shut out in an 11-0 loss to UNLV Sunday.

Coats also scored in the eighth after reaching second base on a two-base throwing error by the third baseman. Josh Elander advanced Coats to third on a line drive to right field before Jantzen Witte grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score him.

Elander scored the Frogs’ other run in the sixth off of a wild pitch.

Freshman Jerrick Suiter started the game on the mound for TCU, throwing just 1 and 1/3 innings and getting pulled after giving up three runs on four hits.

Fellow freshman Preston Morrison replaced Suiter, pitching 5 and 2/3 innings and giving up only one run, which was unearned, on three hits. Morrison struck out four DBU hitters and lowered his ERA to 1.18.

The Frogs committed three errors in the game.

DBU starter Jay Calhoun got the win, throwing 4 and 1/3 scoreless innings and giving up just three hits.

Boomer Collins led the Patriots (18-9) with two hits and an RBI. Ronnie Mitchell also had two hits and scored two runs, including the first of the game in the first inning. 

Right-hander Michael Smith earned the save, throwing 3 and 2/3 innings and giving up just one run on one hit.

Tuesday night’s game was delayed with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning when the field lights went out at the stadium. The scoreboard, dugout, press box and concourse lights all managed to stay on during the 18-minute blackout.

TCU will be back in action Thursday night against UNC-Wilmington at home. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
