Many college seniors can find themselves apprehensive about finding a job in today’s economy, but TCU’s Graphic Design program has increased its seniors’ odds of employment with the Senior Graphic Design Show, Lewis Glaser, professor and coordinator of graphic design, said.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics there are over 2 million unemployed college graduates.
For graphic design majors that statistic is less frightening because they have a job placement rate of 90 percent, Glaser said.
“The Graphic Design program is focused on real-world preparation. And while students in our program are born with a talent for design, to be successful they must learn how to be problem solvers, work with deadlines and build professional portfolios,” Glaser said.
Glaser said to help students be successful, the program had courses such as a mandatory student internship course, and a senior thesis and portfolio class which commences with the senior show.
“The Senior Graphic Design Show is the culmination of the senior’s best work, and it is the most attended exhibition for The Art Galleries at TCU because we invite advertising agencies and working professionals looking for new talent,” Glaser said.
He said, each year the talent and quality of work by the senior class grew more impressive, and the attendance of the senior show increased every year as well. This year he said he expected more than 300 people to attend the opening gallery reception April 30.
“The show is so important to graduates because it gives us the opportunity to be seen by professionals without having to go door-to-door, so our work is seen by many more employers,” Diana Combs, a senior graphic design major said.
Combs said she felt lucky to have had the opportunity to study graphic design at the university, which she never thought was possible until she received a scholarship and transferred from Tarrant County College.
Lauren Creer, a senior graphic design major, said she also felt honored and proud to be graduating from TCU. The senior show was a bittersweet end to her college career.
“The senior show is a rite of passage, and after all the hard work it’s finally time,” Glaser said.
