Three weeks into construction on Berry Street and University Drive, project manager Arty Wheaton-Rodriguez said the team is making steady progress on the intersection.

"We're on schedule,” he said. “The crews are working as fast as they can to get the intersection back open."

Businesses received a three-week notice prior to closing, however, the notice was not well received by everyone initially.

Owner of 7-Eleven, Zahid Mehmood, said he was concerned when he first received the notice.

“Originally, they were closing everything," he said. “[Now] they are giving me some exits.”

The Berry Street Initiative construction also affected Kubes Jewlery four months prior to the closure of the intersection.

Co-owner of Kubes Jewlery, Rick Kubes, said the construction inconveniences people but for only a short time.

"People have their favorite places to eat and shop,” Kubes said. “They are going to find their way to get to them.”

In May, the city approved an accelerated plan to close the Berry Street and South University Drive intersection to help the surrounding businesses and community.

The city provided detour routes have made it possible for people to still reach the business of their choice.

Wheaton-Rodriguez said the project was broken down into one phase instead of seven to reduce the amount of time University Drive would be closed.

By focusing only one phase, the construction at the intersection went from lasting 10 months to only two. Wheaton-Rodriguez said the change saved 90 days in the overall project and the intersection would reopen August 6.
