One TCU alum will find himself performing center stage for thousands in Times Square on Friday night.
Three weeks ago former Horned Frog and American Idol contestant Tim Halperin submitted his original song “The Last Song” to the "Bands Against Bullying" competition put on by OnStage.com.
More than 600 bands entered the contest and Halperin was notified of his winning entry on Saturday.
"I’m super excited not only to be in New York City, but to be performing in Times Square,” Halperin said. “I’m just super stoked to be in the moment and to really give it my all.”
Halperin said he wrote the song during his senior year at TCU. He said he wrote the song at a point in his life when he had finally gotten over a heartbreak, and was finally ready to move on.
Although Halperin admits to being interested in the cause “Bands Against Bullying” because of the opportunity to open for the bands Hot Chelle Rae and Meg and Liz, the opportunity to raise awareness to bullying also played a large role, he said.
“I do love giving my time and giving my music to good causes,” Halperin said. “I believe that should be inherently a part of whatever you do; whatever you’re good at.”
Friday night’s concert will be an opportunity for all those in attendance to show support against bullying, and show individuals that it’s okay to speak out against it, and not to be a victim of it, Halperin said.
“Bullies are also doing it because they have their own insecurities,” Halperin said. “It’s good to be in an environment where you can openly talk about it.”
His trip to New York proved that there is more in store for the former Frog. Between practicing for the show, Halperin met with some people in New York that were particularly interested in a Christmas song he wrote.
“We’re actually going to do a short Christmas CD around that song,” Halperin said.
The CD will include original Christmas songs in addition to songs that he wrote himself, Halperin said.
Halperin also plans to take part in Frogs for the Cure with the university again this year.
This year the cause will feature his song “Cross That Line” that Frog fans should look forward to hearing soon, Halperin said.
