A club is bringing Christian women together at TCU and colleges around the country.

Women’s tennis team to compete in regional championship

The women’s tennis team will travel to Waco on Oct. 19 for the UTSA/ITA Texas Regional Championship Friday, where senior Kelsey Sundaram will be able to compete for the first time this fall after undergoing wrist surgery in June.

Sundaram said she has only been able to practice fully for a week.

“I am really nervous," Sundaram said. "I do not know how it is going to go, but I am going to give it my all because it is my senior year."

Head Coach Dave Borelli said he does not expect Sundaram to play her best, but is glad she gets to have match practice before the spring.

The other women on the team have improved since last fall, Borelli said. However, he said the team needed to continue to get better throughout the season.

“I look at all of this as a process. I would like to win the singles and the doubles, but it is a long year, and our main goal is to move up in the national rankings to be competitive for the Big 12 title.” Borelli said.

Last year, at the Texas Regional Championship, the women won the doubles and were competitive in the singles, Borelli said.

“I expect us to do well, but I am not worried about what our results will be because it is just one step closer to focusing on the matches in the spring semester,” Borelli said.

Senior Olivia Smith said she sees this tournament as a good way to observe the competition for the spring.

“Tennis is strong in Texas. There are definitely some top teams we have and have not played before, such as Rice and Texas Tech," Smith said. "We are not expecting to win, but we look forward to seeing the competition."
