Patterson: TCU to play most physical team yet

Gary Patterson said Texas Tech will be the most physical team TCU has faced so far in the 2012 season.

Texas Tech’s new defensive coordinator Art Kauffman has taken a defense that gave up 39.2 points per game a season ago and turned them into the second ranked scoring defense in the Big 12.

“Well number one, they had nine defensive starters returning, and [Kauffman] has done a good job and getting them in a place where they are ready to play,” Patterson said. “They recruited about 9 more junior college guys that came in and have helped them. Their staff has done a good job.

Both TCU and Texas Tech are coming off victories against the second and third ranked offenses in the BIg 12.

TCU can get to 3-1 in Big 12 play with a win Saturday against Texas Tech and their passing offense that ranks fourth nationally.

While TCU shut down Nick Florence and his Baylor offense, Doege was throwing for 499 yards against fifth ranked West Virginia.

Patterson said both quarterbacks are comparable in their skills.

“They know their offenses; they understand their offense, and they both get the ball out of their hands,” Patterson. “But the thing that they can both do that people don’t realize because they throw for a lot of yards is that they are both very elusive. They both can run with the ball.”

As TCU prepares for Texas Tech, Patterson said his team must do a good job of containing the Red Raider running attack.

“The thing that Tech does is that they are very physical, and they can really run the ball well,” Patterson said. “It will be the best football team that we have played this year.”

Kenny Williams leads the Red Raiders in rushing on the season with 376 yards, but Texas Tech features three backs averaging over five yards per carry.

This season when TCU holds opponents to less than 100 yards rushing in a game, the Frogs are 3-0.

Patterson his team will have to focus on competing on Saturday to slow down a Red Raider team with a lot of momentum.

“They pose problems because of their athletes. We’re going to have to compete,” Patterson said.

The wild card in Saturday’s contest will be Texas Tech’s sophomore tight end Jason Amaro, who’s status for the game in uncertain due to an injury in his midsection.

“The guy that is difficult for a lot of people is Jace Amaro,” Patterson said. “He is 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, and even Oklahoma struggled with him.”

“But their guys that have caught the most touchdowns are their outside wide outs. They are all 6-foot-3, 6-foot-4, and especially in the red zone, they go up and catch the ball over the top of you,” Patterson said.

Texas Tech leads the all-time series versus TCU 28-23-3, but TCU beat the Red Raiders the last time the two squads faced each other in 2006.

Saturday’s game will be televised on ABC with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.
