TCU cross country team places fifth in first Big 12 meet

The TCU women’s cross country team met expectations at its first Big 12 Championship meet, placing fifth overall.

Head Coach Liz Wort said last week that she expected the team to place fifth if everyone ran the way they were expected to.

“I am excited with where the women ended up,” Wort said in a press release. “I don’t think it was our best day, but it was really solid all the way across. To finish in the top half of the Big 12 with four freshmen is a great debut. We had some really good performances today.”

Senior runner Agnes Kemboi placed 12th individually, becoming the first TCU athelete to be named All-Big 12.

Kemboi led the team with a time of 21:02:50 in the 6K race. Tricia Terry was the second Horned Frog to cross the finish line placing 17th with a time of 21:32:5.

“She did the same thing she did at the Chile Pepper [Festival,]” Wort said in a press release. “She moved up late and was able to finish high. She was able to put on the blinders to what everyone else was doing because she is a mature senior. It has gotten some good results.”

First-year runners Laura Orlie and Ashley Eckhoff placed 36th and 47th. Orlie finished with a time of 22:08:0; Eckoff in 22:23:3.

Wort said she is pleased with the four first-year runners who helped the team place in the top half of the Big 12.

Senior Katie Dalton closed out the team, scoring in 56th place with a time of 22:48:3.

The men’s team finished the season ninth in team standings. Preston Newsome led the group, finishing in 50th place with a time of 26:47:7 in the 8K.

Select TCU runners will compete at the South Central Regional on Nov. 9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
