West Virginia’s Geno Smith threw for two touchdowns and running back Shawne Alston punched in one-yard touchdown to give the Mountaineers a 21-14 halftime lead over TCU at Milan Puskar Stadium.

TCU’s Matthew Tucker opened the scoring with 2:27 left in the first quarter on a two-yard run. The touchdown was set up by a 22-yard pass to Brandon Carter. The Frogs converted three third downs on the drive.

The Mountaineers responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Smith to J.D. Woods to open the second quarter. The Mountaineers next possession ended with an interception by Jason Verrett.

Trevone Boykin took one play to find an open Josh Boyce for a 33-yard touchdown which put TCU up 14-7.

Tavon Austin took a Smith pass 43 yards on the Mountaineers’ next drive to even the score at 14 with 9:57 left in the half. West Virginia extended their lead to 21-14 after a botched punt return by TCU set up the Mountaineers at the Frogs’ nine-yard line. Alston ran the ball in from one yard out on fourth down.

Boykin threw for 100 yards and a score on 7-of-11 passing.

Smith went 19-of-29 for 174 yards and two touchdowns.
