Sigma Kappa sorority members are going to Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Home this Friday, said Emily Hamlin, the vice president of philanthropic service for the organization.

Hamlin, a senior nursing major, said their members will be singing carols to the residents as they eat their dinner.  This is the second year Sigma Kappa will be caroling at Garden Terrace, she said.

Hamlin said they received such a positive response last year that they decided to do the event again this season.

Brianna McKay, the sorority president elect and a junior marketing and finance major, said that going to Garden Terrace helps show their members why their organization supports Alzheimer’s research.

According to the chapter’s website, they also participate in the annual Fort Worth Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Hamlin said they do not require their members to attend the philanthropic event.  Anyone interested signed up during the weekly meetings.

“With finals week it’s hard to require people who are busy to go,” Hamlin said.  “For people who want a nice study break, this works out perfectly.”

Hamlin said she enjoyed seeing how happy the residents’ faces were as they sang at last year’s event.

“They started to sing along with us to different songs, Hamlin said. “Some people even got up and danced. It was impossible not to see the difference we were making.”

McKay said not all members who attend are great singers.  They do not care if they have talent or not, they just want people who are excited to be there.

Emily Sumpf, a member of Sigma Kappa, said she signed up again this year because she had such a great time last year.

Sumpf, a junior political science major, said she looks forward to spreading the Christmas spirit and bonding with her sisters before going home for winter break.

Hamlin said they look forward to the event and continuing to develop their relationship with Garden Terrace.
