The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams claimed their first Big 12 dual meet wins in program history against West Virginia University on Friday.

The men’s team defeated West Virginia 160-131. The women’s team was also victorious with a 160-140 win.

Head swimming and diving coach Richard Sybesma said the wins were a morale boost for the teams, particularly with the comeback win for the women’s match.

The women’s diving team was behind during the first diving break, losing five of the first seven events of the day.

It was TCU’s sweep of the 100-yard free event, with Katie Scarsella winning first place, Sabine Rasch taking second and Parris Schoppa winning third, that allowed the TCU women to begin their rally.

The women also swept the 200-yard backstroke, with Lizzy Oster finishing first, followed by Aly Davis in second and Ashley Alspaugh in third.

Michelle Fleming’s win in the 200-yard breaststroke event pushed the women’s team ahead of West Virginia with a 97-72 advantage.

The win was sealed after Davis won the 100-yard backstroke and finished second in the 400-yard IM, along with Ali Bleasdell and Rasch providing first-place finishes in the 400-meter IM and 50-meter freestyle, respectively.

The TCU men were led by sophomore Cooper Robinson, who broke records with his performance.

Robinson’s performance in the 200-yard backstroke set a record in the WVU Natatorium with a time of one minute, 48.19 seconds.

Harrison Bui, Thor Stenfjord and Adam Szilagyi each grabbed two individual wins for the Horned Frogs, helping the TCU men claim 10 of the 16 events.

Stenfjord was victorious in the distance events, winning the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle, while Szilagyi placed first in the 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter butterfly. Bui won first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke.

Devin Price’s in the 100-yard freestyle and second place finish in the 50-yard event contributed to the men’s win.

The men’s and women’s teams now hold dual records of 3-1 for the season.

The women will compete against SMU on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Dallas. The men’s and women’s teams take on the University of Texas at home Friday in the University Recreation Center Natatorium at 4:30 p.m.
