TCU’s women’s rifle to travel to UTEP for match this weekend

The women’s rifle will travel to the University of Texas at El Paso this weekend for their last regular season match.

The No. 2 ranked team will shoot against No. 20 UTEP Saturday. The team is hot off their win against No. 4 Alaska and looks to extend their 21-match win streak.

“I think that was our last competition that was really going to be a challenge to the win-loss streak because Alaska is obviously a very good team,” Karen Monez, the university's rifle coach, said.

The match against UTEP serves as more of a check to see where the team is at as a whole rather than a threat to the win-loss streak, Monez said.

“Anytime TCU comes to our campus, we know we are in a fight,” George Brenzovich, UTEP rifle coach, said.

Even with fighting spirit, Brenzovich said the atmosphere of a rifle match is more about the ability of the athletes.

“We have a great deal of respect and admiration for what Karen has been able to do at TCU, and our role as a host is to make sure everything is perfect because we respect and admire great performances. And that’s our sport. It’s unlike others,” Brenzovich said.

TCU competes in both smallbore relay and air rifle, where points are earned for each shot. A perfect team score is 4,800 points.

TCU next faces Air Force in Fort Worth on Feb. 16 for the NCAA Qualifier. Until then, the team will continue to practice to remain consistent, Monez said.

“At this point, they’re ready," Monez said. “Obviously, looking at how many times they’ve shot over 4,700, they already have the score level. It’s just a matter of going out and shooting their average.”
