Red paper hearts covered the wall as students expressed their love for the Mary Couts Burnett Library for the second annual “I Love the TCU Library” contest.

The “I Love the TCU Library” contest encouraged students to explain why they love the library on red paper heart cutouts that were located at the front of the library. The winners of the contest were notified via email and their names were posted on the library’s Facebook page on Thursday.

The winners were: Bobby Pendry, first place; Ashley Rea, second place; Audrey Kromer, third place; and Elizabeth St. Laurent, honorable mention.

Shelda Dean, who handles marketing for the library, said she judged the contest entries along with other members of the library staff.

“We started [the contest] last year because we wanted to engage the students a little bit more, just kind of get their thoughts on what they like about the library and how it’s contributed to their success,” Dean said.

First place winner, sophomore neuroscience major Bobby Pendry, submitted several haikus about why he loves the library.

“My motivation was to write something that they probably wouldn’t see in any of the other entries, something that would definitely be different [and] stand out,” Pendry said.

One of the haikus Pendry entered read:

    “The basement bowels

    Where the studious reside

    …Longing for daylight”

Dean said the judges enjoyed Pendry’s creativity and that “he pretty much hit it on the money.”

The prizes were a $50 restaurant gift certificate, movie tickets to the Movie Tavern at West 7th Street and a box of chocolates.

Second place winner, sophomore English and economics double major Ashley Rea, wrote a list of seven reasons why she loves the library in her entry.

“I love the TCU library and I’ve been there quite often the past couple of weeks studying for exams and stuff,” Rea said.

Third place winner, first-year nursing major Audrey Kromer, wrote an ode to the library.

Kromer said she heard about the contest from one of her sorority sisters, and that she was excited when she saw the email notifying her that she won.

Junior biology major Elizabeth St. Laurent, who won honorable mention, wrote a paragraph about her favorite place in the library – the quiet section.

“I wrote about how I really like the large area of the quiet section because it’s one of the only buildings on campus that hasn’t really been changed a whole lot since we have so much construction going on,” St. Laurent said. “It’s the one place you can go on campus that’s been here for several decades."
