Kimbell Celebrates Family Art Day

Kimbell Art Museum held Art at Your Fingertips: A Family Festival on Saturday, in conjunction with its Bernini: Sculpting in Clay exhibit.

The Kimbell holds four family festivals a year; including ones is April, August and October. Art at Your Fingertips is the first held in 2013.

“It’s just a really great way to reach out to the community and show you can have fun with art,” said Barbara Smith, the museum’s public relations representative.

Other than providing hands-on activities for children, the museum also offers free admission to its special exhibits for the duration of the event. In the case of Bernini, patrons will still receive tickets so the museum can keep track of attendance.

“We like to have a really hands-on studio concept that takes it to a different level in terms of art-making,” says Marilyn Ivy, the museum’s studio and family programs coordinator. “We have children from toddlers to about 15, so I try to come up with projects that everybody will have fun with and is open to experimentation.”

These projects included fingertip paintings and Clay Creatures, where young guests are encouraged to sculpt.

Children filled the seats at various activity tables and work in different mediums with the help of Kimbell employees and family members.

“We did the finger-painting and he’s already made a sculpture,” said Valerie Phelps on her three-year-old son Dylan’s artwork. “Exposing them to different things is always going to be very beneficial to them.” Her husband Daniel noted that at “pretty much every Kimbell event, we’re here.”

“They can learn better if they’re a visual, or hands-on learner,” said Valerie. “It helps the learning process.”

The Kimbell is also incorporating social media into their artsy activities.

Barbara Smith took pictures for Post Your Masterpiece on Facebook, which encourages guests to tag themselves on the Kimbell's Facebook page.

“We’ve had other photo elements before,” said Smith. “But this is where they’re showing off their art and being a part of the online community.”

The activity-filled festival, which featured sculpting and painting for children as well as interactive music and films, began at 1 p.m. and ended at 4 p.m.
