Kitchen blenders began as TCU organizations competed to make the best “mocktail,” a non-alcoholic cocktail, in this year’s Alpha Delta Pi Blend Off.

The 13th annual Blend Off, held in the Brown-Lupton University Union Auditorium on Wednesday, helped raise awareness about drunk driving, Alpha Delta Pi President Jaynie Pallasch said. The funds raised benefits the Fort Worth Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home-away-from-home” for families to stay close to their hospitalized child at little or no cost, according to the website.

“It’s 10 minutes away. We go down there all the time. The families always come up and thank us for making dinner,” Ally Yost, Alpha Delta Pi Blend Off chair, said. “You can see the difference, and they’re so thankful.”

Twenty-eight teams, including TCU Greek organizations and the TCU tennis team, participated in this year’s Blend Off by attempting to create the best mocktail, Yost said.

While music played, students walked through the auditorium and tasted each organization’s drinks.

Teams came up with themes and costumes for the different drinks.

Willy Wonka, Risky Business, Easter bunnies, panda bears, and military men were some of the themes the organizations used for their attire and mocktail recipes.

“My favorite part is seeing the different themes that everyone came up with and just having everyone on campus come in and try the drinks,” Yost said.

The winner of the competition was Beta Theta Pi Team Two.

“Our theme was Risky Business. Our drink name was Christmas Cruiser,” Garret Adair, first-year business major, said.

Their non-alcoholic beverage included strawberries, pina colada mix and green food coloring, Adair said.

The team wore pop-collared dress shirts, a Santa Clause hat and boxers.

The four judges assessed each team individually based on taste, originality and theme. A winner was determined after adding up the final scores, judge and Alpha Delta Pi recruitment chair advisor Kristina Rasley, said.

“It’s great seeing everybody. We’re getting to hang out with Betas and we’re getting to hang out with everyone else around the Greek fraternity and sorority community,” Conner Lunsford, Beta Theta Pi member, said. “It’s really nice being able to see everyone out here having a great time.”
