TCU wins first Big 12 baseball game, defeats Kansas 8-1

In October, the TCU Horned Frogs collected its first-ever major Big 12 win by defeating Kansas in football. In February, TCU shocked the nation with an upset over the Jayhawks in the DMC for its first-ever Big 12 basketball win.

Friday, TCU completed the major collegiate sports triad by defeating Kansas in baseball, effectively giving TCU inaugural Big 12 wins against the Jayhawks in the three major collegiate sports.

The 8-1 TCU win was fueled by a solid performance from Preston Morrison and three doubles from Jantzen Witte.

Morrison threw 7.2 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out five batters. The sophomore has allowed just five walks in 37.2 innings of work and snapped a streak of 28.2 innings without allowing a walk.

TCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Dylan Fitzgerald hammered a RBI double down the left field line, Kevin Cron scored on an error and Derek Odell hit an RBI single to left.

Kansas would score a run off Morrison in the top of the second after two base hits and a Jacob Boylan RBI groundout. It would be the only substantial damage Kansas pulled off against Morrison, who allowed only three more baserunners in the game.

The Frogs insured themselves with more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Boomer White drove in Kyle Bacak with a single. Jantzen Witte hit his first double of the night, setting up a RBI single from Cron. After an error and walk to load the bases, Odell grabbed his second RBI with a single to centerfield, giving TCU a 7-1 lead.

TCU scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth, after Witte hit a double to left field, Fitzgerald singled and Keaton Jones drove Witte in with a groundout, giving the Frogs a 8-1 lead.

The Jayhawks could not find a response, despite getting a double from Michael Suiter in the 9th.

TCU improved to 8-9 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play. The Frogs continue the series against Kansas Saturday when the team sends Brandon Finnegan to the mound. First pitch in Lupton Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
