Despite strong winds, TCU won five events at the TCU Invitational Friday,the first meet of the outdoor track season for the Horned Frogs. 

"The bar just rose today as far as our performances,” TCU head coach Darryl Anderson said, “I thought we had enough good things happen to really set the season off in a positive direction.”

Lavon Collins won the men’s 400-meter hurdles in 52.37 seconds and Cameron Parker won the men’s triple jump. 

The men’s 4×100-meter relay team, made up of Ronnie Baker, Charles Silmon, Harvey McSwain and Raymond Bozmans also won, with a time of 39.72.

Larissa Matthews won the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 13.49 secondsand Megan Smith won women’s shot put with a throw of 16.10 meters. 

Anderson said that Veronica Jones’s second-place performance in the200-meter dash stood out at the meet to him. Jones set a personal record of 23:15 seconds in the dash and her time counts towards qualification for the NCAA West Preliminaries.

The time will not in the record book due to wind factor. According to NCAA standards, the wind has to be under 4.0 meters per second for qualifying times. 

Next week, the track runners will compete at the Baylor Quad Meet and thethrowers will compete at the Bobby Lane Invitational. 

Anderson said he was pleased with the outcome of the team’s first outdoor meet, but he still has high expectations for the rest of the outdoor season. 

At the end of the day, the team is trying to work themselves to catch up to my expectations,” Anderson said. “They didn’t raise the bar higher than I had it; they are starting to move in the direction of the bar.”
