In an effort to unite the running community on campus, first-year criminal justice major Chris Gresens created the TCU Running Club this semester.

Gresens said he noticed the gap in the various clubs offered at the university and immediately took action.

The goal of the club is to provide students who enjoy running with a way to meet fellow TCU runners and to also get plugged into the local Dallas-Fort Worth running community, Gresens said.

“The running community in Dallas-Fort Worth is enormous,” Gresens said. “Club members can meet other runners, have a comfortable place to train with other people and learn about local races.”

While some logistics of the club are still under construction, Gresens said, that he plans to have weekly meetings, group runs, races and socials. He is also in the process of getting the club recognized by a national running organization. Currently, there are about 50 students signed up to participate.

Cristie Carpenter, associate director of campus recreation and running club adviser, said she thinks there is a widespread interest in running among TCU students.

Diego Montalvo, a graduate student in the kinesiology department, joined the running club to be involved with a group that enjoys his same passion.

“I think it’s a good idea to get the whole TCU running community together,” Montalvo said. “I enjoy running, so to run in a group of people who enjoy the same thing, it’s a good time and it helps keep you accountable as well.”

Gresens, an Air Force Veteran and marathon runner himself, said the club is open to beginning and advanced runners.

“Members can find someone else who is training for a marathon or for a half marathon,” Gresens said. “Everyone can gather together and share all of their knowledge and encourage each other.”
