ESPN recruiter visits campus

A recruiter from ESPN spoke at the university Tuesday to give students information on job opportunities and tips on the hiring process for ESPN Recruiting Day.

TCU is one of the few universities in the country that ESPN recruiter and production research manager Steve Rutkowski chose to visit.

This was Rutkowski’s second trip to the university, and he said he was glad he got the opportunity to talk with students this time around.

Rutkowski held two information sessions on campus.

The first information session was held for Schieffer School students in Moudy South. Rutkowski held a second session in the BLUU Ballroom that was open to students of all majors.

Junior broadcast journalism major Grace Fontenot said she liked how specific Rutkowski was about what he was looking for in a job candidate.

Having relevant experience, confidence and knowing what job you are applying for were some of the most important qualities Rutkowski listed.

Fontenot said she believes that the tips Rutkowski gave will be helpful when applying to any job, not just ESPN.

Rutkowski said he visits 15 to 20 universities each year.

He chooses schools that can “talk sports” and are well known for the high quality of students they produce, he said.

“TCU is in an area with heavily populated sports teams, along with the skill sets and success rates the university has had,” Rutkowski said.

Rutkowski said the university’s career services and its desire to engage with ESPN also contributed to his decision to come to TCU.

“They have done a very nice job of setting up my days here,” he said. “When schools show a passion and come through for someone like myself, it makes me want to come back.”

Rutkowski said Baylor and the University of Texas at Austin were the other universities he visited in the state.
