One year after completing the two-year $164 million renovation project, Amon G. Carter Stadium has been named one of five finalists for the Sports Facility of the Year.

The award winner, handed out by Sport Business Daily, will be announced at the Sports Business Awards Ceremony held in New York May 22.

Other facilities up for the award are the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Marlins Park in Miami, UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion and JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.

The award is no stranger to the area since Cowboys Stadium in Arlington won the award back in 2010.

TCU Director of Athletics Chris Del Conte said that it is an honor to be nominated since TCU has not gone out of its way to promote the new stadium.

“I think word of mouth has just spread,” Del Conte said. “And it’s just the best form of flattery because we didn’t do any promotion. It's just word of mouth saying ‘Hey, you got to come see this. It’s unbelievable.’”

Amon G. Carter Stadium, which was opened in 1930, had not had a major renovation done since 1956, according to the timeline inside the stadium.

Fans like Mary Kaszynski, who said she has been coming to games for 15 years now, liked the feel of the old stadium and thought the renovations did a good job of keeping that feel.

Associate Director of Athletics Ross Bailey, who has been at the university for 25 years, said they kept that idea in mind when designing the new stadium.

“We wanted all the new amenities but with the old school charm,” Bailey said.

Bailey and his staff are in the process of putting in a new drainage system on the field, and they said they expect it to be done by the beginning of next season.

When asked if fans can expect any further renovations to the stadium, Del Conte said, “[Coach [Patterson] has an imagination that won’t quit. This is just the tip of the iceberg.”
