According to the Victory Over Violence website, 766 people participated in the 5 km event that began at 8:30 A.M. The one kilometer event started shortly before at 8:00 A.M.
Julia Pederson, a sophomore nursing major, said Alpha Chi came out to run and raise awareness for domestic violence.
Katherine Perry, a sophomore speech pathology major and member of Alpha Chi, said the sorority got together a group of about 60 women to run the race.
"It's important because nobody really knows about the Women's Center and the amount of domestic violence in Fort Worth, and so we are running to raise awareness and raise money," Perry said.
Kassie Dyakon, a sophomore business major, said she thinks it is important to bring attention to the issue because violence against women occurs every day. She said she hoped the event would bring more volunteers to the center.
"A lot of my friends are Alpha Chi's and they convinced me to do the 5k, but I think it's a really good cause so I probably would have done it anyway," Emily Cowan, a sophomore social work major, said,
Some sponsors of the event included the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, American Airlines and Noteboom the Law Firm, according to the Victory over Violence website.
