Former Student Body President Brent Folan and current Student Body President Joshua Simpson asked the candidates running for the position this year tough questions at the Student Government Association meeting Tuesday evening.
Folan asked Graham McMillan, current vice president for external affairs, who is running for student body president, to give examples of initiatives he had started and completed himself.
“The projects you just mentioned, you took credit for… I find it kind of baffling to me,” Folan said. “So I want to hear projects you have started and you finished.”
McMillan promptly pulled out a list and began to read them.
He said he has worked on projects such as bringing the mayor to campus and bussing students to the airport during holidays, among other things.
"I think the [Recreation Center] mirrors are a good example of this… Relationships with the mayor, I brought the mayor on campus… I co-authored the bikes fix-it station… I helped with buses to the airport… I helped with buses to Cowboys Stadium for the BYU game," McMillan said.
Folan said McMillan was listing initiatives behind which he had not been the primary, driving force.
Later, Simpson asked Cody Westphal, the current treasurer who is also running for student body president, "What are the five values of SGA and how do you see yourself fulfilling those values?"
Westphal could not name the five values.
“I don’t know the five values exactly, because I tend to focus less on words, more on action,” Westphal said. “I know service, passion, effectiveness… you know what, I’m a listener–let’s hear ‘em.”
Members of the House of Student Representatives started to name values, and a House member mentioned collaboration.
"I held a student forum,” Westphal said. “Nobody else did."
Westphal mentioned other projects he had been a part of that coincided with SGA’s five values: passion, collaboration, progression, servant leadership and effectiveness.
Other items from Tuesday’s meeting…
• The other candidates running for student body officers presented their platforms and answered questions during the meeting.
• House members passed a bill to give $1,500 to eleven40seven, TCU’s journal of the arts.
• The dedication for the Student Memorial will be Tuesday at 5 p.m., Simpson said.
