The sun came out just in time on Thursday afternoon for Alpha Omicron Pi’s first philanthropy event on campus, the Splish Splash Shoot Out Arthritis water basketball tournament.

The event was hosted at the outdoor pool at the University Recreation Center and raised money for the Arthritis Foundation, whose mission is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis, according to their website.

Kellie Mossler, a sophomore early childhood education major and member of Alpha Omicron Pi, said their chapter chose to do a water basketball tournament because it was different than what other fraternities and sororities do at the university.

“We are a new chapter on campus, so we wanted to make our event a new and fun thing,” she said.

Rebecca Whiteman, a junior speech pathology major and president of Alpha Omicron Pi, said she hoped the event brought knowledge of their foundation and their sorority to the campus and community.

“We want to create more awareness for arthritis and get to know other groups on campus at the same time,” she said.

Mossler agreed and said she hoped the event was a good introduction for Alpha Omicron Pi to the Greek community.

“I think we have done a really good job at getting our name out there. We are all really awesome girls,” Mossler said. “We all come from really different places, so it adds a really unique spice, and I think that we have been a really good addition to the TCU campus, and we are really happy to be a chapter and to be a part of such a great Greek community.”

The Kappa Alpha Theta team won the water basketball tournament.
