Josh Boyce leads a group of eight TCU Horned Frogs who are trying to make their way into the NFL draft, which starts Thursday, April 25.
Boyce, a former receiver at TCU, visited the facilities of the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys on official meetings within the last month.
He said that while he enjoyed the visits, he doesn’t have a specific preference to which team drafts him.
“Whoever wants to pay the bills, that’s my favorite team,” Boyce said, with a laugh.
Boyce trained in California after graduating from TCU in December with a degree in sociology. He will watch the draft with his parents in his home state of Texas and said his only focus during the draft days will be staying calm until his name is officially called.
Boyce, who was one of three TCU players to be invited to the NFL combine, is projected to be a third to sixth round draft pick.
At the combine, Boyce posted a 4.38 40-yard dash time and finished in the top five for his position in five workouts, including the 40-yard dash, bench press, three-cone drill, broad jump and the 60-yard shuttle.
Boyce did not participate in TCU’s Pro Day after breaking his foot in workouts at the combine. Boyce said his foot has been healing up and he is back to running workouts.
Boyce was one of two players from the 2012 TCU team to declare early for the draft and forego a year of NCAA eligibility. Boyce said that, as of now, he is pleased with his choice to leave for the draft early.
Stansly Maponga, a defensive end, was the other player who declared early.
Maponga agreed to a filmed interview with TCU 360 Tuesday, but he later rescheduled his appearance. He did not show up to his rescheduled time and has not returned phone calls or text messages.
Maponga, who is still struggling with a foot injury caused during TCU’s game against Baylor in October, was also a participant in the NFL combine. Maponga lifted 30 reps on the bench press and did not participate in other drills.
At TCU’s Pro Day, Maponga ran a 4.84 in the 40-yard dash and repeated a total of 30 bench press reps. He also added a 29.5 inch vertical jump at the Pro Day as well.
According to his teammates, Maponga met with the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins on official meetings after the NFL combine. He is projected to be a fifth to seventh round draft pick.
Matthew Tucker, a tailback, is projected to be a seventh round selection or a free agent pickup. Tucker was the third and final Horned Frog to be invited to the 2013 NFL combine. Tucker met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys in the weeks after the combine.
Blaize Foltz, an offensive lineman, did not get an invitation to the combine, but is projected to be a seventh round-free agent pickup as well. Foltz bench pressed 33 reps at TCU’s Pro Day and visited with the Saint Louis Rams and the Dallas Cowboys.
