TCU baseball silences Texas Southern, wins 4-0 in two-hitter

TCU pitching choked the offense of Texas Southern, as the Horned Frogs held the Tigers to a mere two hits, and shut them out, winning 4-0.

On the mound, the Frogs struck out 10 batters. Trey Teakell started for TCU but had to leave the game after the first inning due to a pulled muscle. He is expected to be out for up to two weeks.

Stefan Crichton relieved Teakell and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced in four innings.

Cody Jones and Derek Odell led the Frogs with two hits apiece, as Jones extended his hitting streak to four games.

“I go up there every time with one thing in mind and that’s to get on base,” Jones said.

TCU earned a season-high of eight stolen bases in a game. Jones, Kevin Cron and Paul Hendrix each contributed with two stolen bases each.

The Frogs were on the board quickly in the first inning. Jones, the leadoff man, was hit by a pitch. He stole second base and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. After a Boomer White walk, Jones scored after Hendrix reached first base on an error.

After a passed ball advanced runners to second and third, Jantzen Witte hammered out a sacrifice fly to bring home White and make the game 2-0.

The top of the order earned another run for TCU in the fourth inning. Texas Southern left-hander Jamell Blue walked Jones, who then stole second base and advanced to third on a balk. With two outs, White hit a hard single to left field, scoring Jones for the 3-0 lead.

One more run came for the Frogs in the seventh inning. Derek Odell singled up the middle. Kevin Cron followed with a double off the wall in left center, which drove home Odell for the final run of the night.

TCU will face the University of Southern California on the road this weekend. The first game of the series is 8 p.m. (CST) Friday.
