TCU golfer Julien Brun named finalist for Ben Hogan Award

TCU sophomore Julien Brun is the first Horned Frog to be named as a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award, the award given to America’s top collegiate golfer.

The French native and All-American was named as a semi-finalist last season. Brun won three events this season and ranks in the top four in both the Golfstat Cup and Golfweek/Sagarin index.

Brun was a runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Championship and was an All-American selection and a first-team All-Big 12 selection. In the past year, Brun has finished in the top-10 eight times in 11 collegiate events.

Brun is only the third international student-athlete to be named as a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award in the past past five years. He is the first European finalist since Indiana’s Jorge Campillo in 2009.

Brun is competing against fellow finalists Michael Kim from the University of California and Chris Williams from the University of Washington.

Kim, a sophomore as well, is a four-time event winner and the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year. He is the highest-ranked collegiate player in both the Golfstat Cup and the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Williams, a senior from Moscow, Idaho, will play in the 2013 U.S. Open and 2013 British Open. The winner of the 2012 Mark H. McCormack Medal, Williams has seven top-10 finishes in the season’s tournaments, including three runner-up placements. He has yet to win an event on the year.

The winner of the award will be announced May 20 at the Colonial Country Club, just prior to the start of the PGA TOUR’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
